This morning I was watching a old rerun of Top Gear on Veetle.Clarkson was driving a Skoda (something). What it transpired is that if you regularly take the motorway a higher BHP vehicle give you better fuel economy.

Living on a tiny island I average under 500km per month but must report exceptional consumption results from by 115bhp diesel (compared to my 2Lt 2008 Toyota Auris).

I'm not so sure it's that simplistic.

I imagine it depends what speeds you tend to drive at.

Better acceleration for overtaking.

Better acceleration from standstill.

More pulling power due to having more horses.
